Spain Emphasizes A Fair Russia-Ukraine Peace Treaty For Europe

JAKARTA - Spanish Foreign Minister, Jose Manuel Albares, stated that any possible peace agreement between Russia and Ukraine must be fair to Europe and its surrounding region.

During a visit to the French capital, Paris, along with several foreign ministers of other EU member countries, Albares commented on the statement by United States PresidentDonald Trump who previously announced his telephone conversation with Russian President Vladimir Putin.

He responded to Trump's statement with caution and asserted, "Nothing has been decided about Ukraine without Ukraine, and nothing has been decided about European security without Europe".

"Russia's attack on Ukraine clearly has an impact on European security," he said as quoted by ANTARA from Anadolu, Thursday, February 13.

Albares also emphasized that every peace agreement must respect the UN Charter.

"Unfair peace will not end an unfair war, because such agreement will not benefit European security nor global stability," he said.

Albares' statement was delivered shortly after Trump and Putin had a telephone conversation. "We discussed Ukraine, the Middle East, energy, artificial intelligence, dollar power, and various other issues," Trump wrote on his social media platform, Truth Social.

Trump also said they talked about the strengths of their respective countries and "big benefits that one day can be obtained through cooperation".

"But first of all, as we agreed, we want to stop millions of lives lost due to the Russian-Ukraine war. President Putin even used my very strong campaign slogan, 'Healthy Supplies'. We both really believe in it," he continued.

Trump explained that they agreed to work closely together, including visiting each other's countries. In addition, they also agreed that teams from both sides immediately start negotiations.

"We will start by contacting Ukrainian President (Volodymyr) Zelenskyy to tell him about this conversation. I will do it right now," he said.

Trump also spoke with Zelenskyy about the Russo-Ukrainian war. "The conversation went very well. He, like President Putin, wanted to achieve peace," he wrote on Truth Social.

Trump said he had also discussed with Zelenskyy about the meeting to be held on Friday in Munich, Germany, where US Vice President JD Vance and Foreign Minister Marco Rubio will lead the talks.

"I hope the outcome of the meeting will be positive. It's time to stop this unreasonable war, where so many deaths and destructions can actually be avoided. God bless the people of Russia and Ukraine!" Trump concluded.
