JAKARTA - Political economic observer Mohammad Zulfikar Dachlan assessed that the government needs to immediately budget for the construction of a sea embankment or Giant Sea Wall. Because, according to him, the coast of Java, including Jakarta, continues to be overshadowed by the threat of drowning due to tidal flooding and abrasion.
"Currently we hear that tidal flooding is not only on the coasts of Banten and Jakarta. The coast of Central Java is starting to be heard frequently. Especially Semarang, or Indramayu too. Well, it is true that Pak Prabowo's program launched the GSW project," Zulfikar told reporters, Thursday, February 13.
Zulfikari assessed that the local government in coastal areas agreed with the Giant Sea Wall project, including the DKI Jakarta Provincial Government.
"Remember, Jakarta is facing two big problems. The decline in land level and tidal flooding. If left unchecked, Jakarta can sink for a long time," he said.
Regarding the large budget for the development of Giant Sea Wall, Zulfikar views that the government can find a solution. One of them is by inviting investors or looking for low-interest loans.
"If the loan is used for the benefit of the people, I don't think it's a problem. The important thing is that the development process is transparent, and there is minimal leakage," said Zulfikar.
On the one hand, the development of Giant Sea Wall is said to have helped improve the national economy. Because, this giant project will absorb large numbers of domestic workers.
Separately, Deputy Chairperson of the Jakarta DPRD from the NasDem Party, Wibi Andrino supports the idea of building GSW from President Prabowo, as well as the discourse on the construction of Giant Mangrove Wall initiated by the elected Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung.
According to Wibi, Giant Mangrove Wall aims well, namely protecting coastal areas from abrasion and improving the mangrove ecosystem.
This is as good as the Giant Sea Wall program launched by President Prabowo, namely protecting coastal residents from abrasion and tidal flooding, as well as improving coastal infrastructure.
"For something good, of course we support it. From our perspective in the Jakarta DPRD, this plan is generally considered based on its impact on the environment, cost effectiveness, and long-term benefits for the community," explained Wibi.
Currently, the threat of abrasion on the north coast of Java Island is in the worrying stage. Based on data from the Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries (KKP) in 2015, at least 400 kilometers of coastline in Indonesia disappeared due to abrasion.
Thus, a total of 745 kilometers of beaches disappeared 44 percent. Including what happened on the coast of Tangerang, an area of 579 hectares (ha) of land disappeared during the period 1995-2015.

Head of the BNPB Disaster Data, Information and Communication Center, Abdul Muhari, confirmed the data. Where, the coastal abrasion rate has grown quite significantly to 200 m to 500 m, in the last 10 years.
"It seems that areas whose mangroves are not maintained are very risky to be eroded (absorbed) in a significant area," said Abdul Muhari to reporters.
One of the impacts was involved in the satellite imagery of Anom Beach, Pakuhaji, Tangerang Regency. 16 years ago, there were still land and expanses of rice fields on Anom Beach. As a result of abrasion, little by little the land began to disappear. In 2014, there was a tremendous change, the sea distance was very close to the point that reads 'Anom Beach' which was captured from the satellite image screen.
Meanwhile, in 2024, the position of the 'Anom Beach' point is in the sea, and no longer visible overland, as before. Screenshot of the latest Satellite Image taken on January 24, 2025, found the 'Anom Beach' point already in the sea position, and that was the position of the sea fence which some time ago was excited.
