JAKARTA - The Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) stated that the 6.2 magnitude earthquake that occurred in the Indian Ocean west of South Aceh Regency, Aceh. does not have the potential to cause a tsunami.

BMKG Director of Earthquake and Tsunami Daryono said the certainty was obtained based on the results of modeling the source of the earthquake carried out by the BMKG expert team.

The BMKG detected a tectonic earthquake center located at sea at a depth of 59 kilometers with coordinates 3.15 degrees North Latitude (LU); 96.95 degrees East Longitude (BT), or 28 kilometers southwest of Tapaktuan City, South Aceh.

The earthquake with the latest parameters of 5.2 magnitudes was triggered by rock deformation in the Indo-Australian Plate which was subducted under the island of Sumatra.

Based on the results of the analysis conducted by BMKG, it is known that the plate rock movement mechanism is a normal oblique or horizontal and down movement.

"From this modeling, it shows that the earthquake has no potential to cause a tsunami," he said as quoted by ANTARA, Friday, January 31.

The earthquake was detected shaking a number of areas several times at 18.03 WIB in South Aceh Regency, Simelue Regency, Aceh Besar, Aceh Jaya, Gayo Lues, East Aceh, Banda Aceh City with an intensity scale of III-IV MMI (vibrations felt by many people in the house).

Even to Medan City, North Sumatra with an intensity scale of II MMI (vibrational vibrations felt by several people, light objects that were hung swayed).

"Three aftershocks recorded as of 18.35 WIB with a magnitude of 3.8," he said.

The BMKG appealed to the public to remain calm and not be influenced by issues that doubted the truth until the results of the thorough event analysis were reported by the BMKG.

The results of this analysis are usually obtained by the public by accessing the online application infoBMKG, social media infoBMKG, or can directly contact the nearest BMKG office.

In addition, he said, the community is also expected to always follow and obey the disaster impact mitigation guidelines from the Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD) in Aceh.
