JAKARTA - An Indian court sentenced a police volunteer to life imprisonment for the rape and murder of a junior doctor at a Kolkata hospital.
The doctor's body was found in a classroom in a university and R G Kar Medical Hospital on August 9, 2024.
This case sparked a wave of mass protests. Other doctors have not worked for weeks demanding justice for him and better security in public hospitals.
As reported by Reuters on Monday, January 20, the defendant Sanjay Roy, a police volunteer, was found guilty by judge Anirban Das on Saturday, last weekend who said evidence had not immediately proven the allegations against Roy.
Roy said he was innocent and had been framed. The perpetrator asked for clemency.
Federal police, investigating the case, said the crime was included in the " rarest" category and therefore Roy deserved the death penalty.
Judge Das said this was not a "very rare" crime, and said the perpetrator of the doctor's rape, Roy, could appeal to a higher court.
The sentence was handed down in a overcrowded courtroom when the judge allowed the public to watch Monday's trial. Rapid hearings in court are not open to the public.
The parents of the junior doctor were among those present in court. Security was increased with dozens of police personnel deployed at the court complex.
