Ministry Of Imipas Says PP Regulates Immigration Officers Bringing Guns Is In Process

JAKARTA - The Ministry of Immigration and Corrections (Kemen Imipas) said that the government regulation (PP) regulating immigration officers can carry firearms (senpi) is in process.

Acting Director General of Immigration at the Ministry of Imipas Saffar Muhammad Godam explained that his party did not set a target for the completion of the arrangement.

"There is no target, just finish it. The sooner, the better," said Saffar at the East Plaza, Gelora Bung Karno complex, Jakarta, Antara, Sunday, January 19.

The PP referred to by Saffar is a derivative of Law Number 63 of 2024 concerning Immigration which has been set on October 17, 2024.

The regulation of using firearms has been regulated in Article 3 paragraph (4) of the Immigration Law. The regulation states that in carrying out immigration functions in the field of law enforcement and state security, certain immigration officials can be equipped with firearms that are of the type and the terms of use are regulated in accordance with the provisions of the legislation.

Previously, Deputy Minister of Imipas Silmy Karim while still serving as Director General of Immigration at the Ministry of Law and Human Rights explained that giving senpi to immigration officers was not to be arrogant, but for the sake of enforcing immigration law against foreign nationals (WNA).

"They (foreigners), in some cases, put up resistance, and it was proven that two of our members died in my term in office. Here it is necessary to be equipped in the context of the safety of the soul of my members, self-defense, not to be arrogant," said Silmy Karim when met in Jakarta, Monday (30-9-2024).
