JAKARTA - Deputy Secretary General for Law and Human Rights of the Indonesian Ulema Council (MUI) KH Ikhsan Abdullah said the proposed use of zakat funds to finance the free nutritious food program (MBG) was very inappropriate.

MUI argues that the free lunch program is not included in eight asnaf or groups of people entitled to receive zakat according to the instructions of the Qur'an.

Eight zakat asnaf according to the orders of the Qur'an are poor, poor, amil or people who collect and distribute zakat, converts or new converts to Islam, riqab or slaves who want to liberate, gharim or people who have a lot of debt but are unable to pay it, fisabilillah or people fight in the way of Allah, and ibnu sabil or people who run out of money in the journey of obedience to Allah.

"So you can't then use zakat for other programs (such as free nutritious food)," said Ikhsan, Thursday, January 16.

According to him, if the National Zakat Agency (Baznas) wants to use zakat to pay for the free lunch program, then it is mandatory to get approval from muzakki or people who pay zakat.

"Even if the limit, for example, will attract one of the eight asnaf to be used as one of the asnaf for the free meal program, then Baznas must obtain a permit for approval from the zakat payer, whether the zakat rida is used to help the government for a free nutritious eating program," said Ikhsan.

Ikhsan considered it very inappropriate if the zakat that had been collected was distributed to outside the eight recipients, such as being used for the free nutritious food program as proposed by the Chairman of the Regional Representative Council (DPD) Sultan B Najamuddin.

"So it's not as easy as what my brother from the DPD said, it's very wrong. An in-depth study is needed because the signs in the Al-Quran Letter of At-Taubah verse 60 are very clear, so you can't get out of that corridor," said Ikhsan.

MUI is very supportive of the free nutritious food that is being run by the government, although it does not agree to the financing using zakat.

MUI advises the government to use constitutional theory by discreting or asking large companies for financial assistance to finance free nutritious food programs, in order to reduce stunting and poverty.
