JAKARTA - Osteoporosis, "silent illness or silent disease" and can be prevented, continues to threaten millions of Indonesians. The data shows that 2 out of 5 Indonesians are at risk of developing osteoporosis, and about 63 percent of the elderly have experienced a decline in activity due to this disease.
Seeing this condition, Fonterra Brands Indonesia through AnleneTM and the Indonesian Osteporosis Association (PEROSI) held an education program for the 2024 National Osteoporosis Day Fun Walk simultaneously in Jakarta, Bali, Surabaya, Yogyakarta, Medan and Malang on December 15, 2024 and aims to encourage the Indonesian people to continue to be active and free from the risk of osteoporosis when they are elderly.
This activity is also to commemorate National Osteoporosis Day and is in line with the global theme World Osteoporosis Day, 'Say No To Fragile Bones'. Anlene will also continue a similar initiative in 2025 on a larger scale.
This activity was motivated by the phenomenon of increasing the elderly population in Indonesia. In 2020, there were 28.5 million elderly people in Indonesia and this represents 10 percent of the total Indonesian population.
This proportion is predicted to continue to increase to 20.5 percent in 2050 (Indonesian Statistics 2022)2. The high population of the elderly must be followed by efforts to maintain health.
Indonesian people must start preparing themselves as early as possible to stay active and not have limited mobility when they are in their advanced age. In fact, many of them are elderly with osteoporosis and it is even estimated that more than 50% of cervical fractures due to osteoporism occurred in Asia in 2050.
The 2024 National Osteoporosis Day Fun Walk Program was attended by thousands of participants from various community communities, members of PROSI and the general public.
In this activity, Anlene conducted a bone density check with a scanning bone, while PEROSI conducted an osteoporosis education with 4 themes, namely:
1) Get Used To Saving Bone Density Early, Strong Bones All Over The Body, Prevent Fragile Bones Breaks
2) Early Detection Of Bone Keropos And Proper Therapy Protects The Future From Hendaya
3) Healthy Nutrition, Strong Bones
4) Active Movement To Maintain Strong And Free Bones Osteoporosis
Various interactive games and other activities are also available at this event to provide educational experience for participants.
The Director of Prevention and Control of Infectious Diseases (P2PTM) of the Indonesian Ministry of Health, Dr. Siti Nadia Tarmizi, M.Epid emphasized the importance of cross-sectoral collaboration in efforts to control osteoporosis. In his remarks, he expressed his appreciation for the contributions of various parties in education and handling osteoporosis in Indonesia.
"The Indonesian Ministry of Health appreciates the strategic collaboration of various institutions to educate and deal with osteoporosis. This collaboration is very important to help reduce the prevalence rate of osteoporosis," said dr. Siti Nadia.
He revealed that data from the Indonesian Ministry of Health showed that the prevalence of osteoporosis in Indonesia was 23 percent in women aged 50-70 years, and increased to 53 percent in women over 70 years.
He emphasized that osteoporosis is often not detected until bone damage occurs, which requires long-term care and provides economic and social burdens for families who care.
"Osteoporosis can actually be prevented from an early age through a healthy lifestyle, adequate nutrition, regular physical activity, and routine examinations. This information must be of concern to all parties so that we can work together to maintain the health of the bones of the Indonesian people," he added.
Chairman of the Indonesian Osteoporosis Association (PEROSI): Dr. dr.men Z. Tamin, Sp.KFR, MS(K), FIPM(USG) said, according to data from the Indonesian Ministry of Health, the prevalence data for osteoporosis is quite high.
"Therefore, PEROSI always focuses on education, diagnosis and structuring osteoporosis. This time, we hold simultaneous commemoration of Osteoporosis Day in 5 cities with the hope that information regarding the prevention of osteoporosis can be spread to the wider community. The 10,000-step walking is an activity that we recommend for the prevention of osteoporosis. Footways are closely related to bone density and bone loss rate," he explained.
President Director, Fonterra Brands Indonesia, Yauwanan Wigneswaran added AnleneTM is a pioneer and is at the forefront of supporting bone health for decades and consistently inspiring Indonesians to live an active and healthy life to an advanced age.
This year, we have done a free bone scan, accompanied by educational programs and nutritional solutions to support strong bones, flexible joints, and active muscles.
"Of the nearly 150,000 people who have carried out the scan, during the January-December 2024 period, we found nearly 50 percent or about 67,547 people at high risk. This means that they have a low bone density rate of <-1.0 and are classified as osteopenia. For this reason, meeting the nutritional needs of the body and staying active is the main key to maintaining health throughout life. Now is the right time to start acting and fulfill our body's needs to have a stronger and healthier future when we enter advanced age," he explained.
Yauwanan added, one form of our commitment is to continue strategic collaboration with the Indonesian Ministry of Health and PEROSI to encourage more people to pay attention to their bone health and remain active.
"One of them is the 'Taking 10,000 Steps Every Day' program which is an easy and effective physical activity to strengthen bones. In the event we also held a free bone scan (bone scan). Today's activity will not stop here, we will hold an event that involves more people in Jakarta on January 12, 2025 and in Surabaya on January 26, 2025. At AnleneTM we believe in the right nutrition and an active lifestyle, age is not an obstacle to being healthy and having good mobility so that they can live a maximum life," he said.
Scientific & Nutrition Manager Fonterra Brands Indonesia, Haryadi Raharjo explained more about nutrition from AnleneTM which can support daily nutrition to prevent osteoporosis,
"Anlene has complete nutrients that are formulated specifically for adults. 2 glasses of Anlene a day meets 100 percent of daily calcium needs, collagen, vitamin C, protein, vitamin B6, and B12 as well as potassium. Anlene does not contain additional sugar, so it is the right choice to prevent osteoporosis," he said.
