JAKARTA - A senior White House official said on Tuesday the United States was working to realize a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip, as the Palestinian enclave died.

US Deputy National Security Adviser Jon Finer said President Joe Biden would send more senior aides to the Middle East in the next few weeks to reach a Gaza ceasefire agreement.

He said the agreement between Israel and the Lebanese militant group Hezbollah provided an increase in energy for the deal in Gaza.

"We believe there is momentum in that process; that momentum increases as our partners and we reach a ceasefire in the conflict between Israel and Hezbollah in Lebanon," Finer said in an interview at a Reuters NEXT conference in New York.

"There is new energy in this regard," he said.

However, Finer did not specify who officials would be sent to the Middle East or what progress they had made towards a deal that had been difficult to reach over the months.

It is known, so far the Palestinian militant groups Hamas and Israel have carried out a number of negotiations with Egyptian intermediaries, Qatar and Uncle Sam's country.

The latest conflict in Gaza broke out on October 7, 2023, when a Palestinian militant group led by Hamas attacked Israel's southern region, leaving about 1,200 people dead and 250 others taken hostage to Gaza, according to Israeli calculations.

In response, Israel staged blockades, airstrikes, and ground operations in the Gaza Strip.

Yesterday, Gaza's health authorities confirmed that the death toll from Palestine since the latest conflict broke out had risen to 44,786, while injuries reached 106,188, the majority being women and children, quoted from WAFA.
