JAKARTA - The United States military commander confirmed that his party has no plans to send military instructors to Ukraine, but will only do so if the war with Russia is over.
Russia is slowly making progress in eastern Ukraine, taking advantage of Kyiv's lack of troops and weapons supplies from the West.
The United States and its allies are known to provide billions of dollars in weapons assistance, supply intelligence information, and provide training for Ukrainian troops abroad.
"Currently, there are no plans to bring US instructors to Ukraine," said Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff of the United States Military, General Charles Q. Brown, as reported by Reuters, May 21.
"Once this conflict is over and we are in better shape, then I'm sure we can bring back instructors," added General Brown.
Before Russia's invasion in February 2022, the United States was known to have around 150 military trainers in Ukraine.
General Brown spoke alongside US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin after a meeting with Ukraine's military supporters. Both he and Defense Secretary Austin stressed the need to support Kyiv, as the country faces growing pressure from Russian forces in Kharkiv.
Meanwhile, the Pentagon rejected a suggestion from former top State Department official Victoria Nuland to ABC News that President Joe Biden should lift a ban on Ukraine using US weapons to attack targets in Russia, which it fears could trigger Washington's direct conflict with Moscow.

Meanwhile, French diplomats said Macron's idea was to spark debate on the issue, but there were no concrete plans in that direction.
