JAKARTA - Iran's top security official said the US airstrike against Iranian-backed militias in East Syria on Friday sparked acts of terrorism in the region.

The attack is an attack on the position of the paramilitary group Kataib Hezbollah (KH) along the Iraqi border, in retaliation for an attack on a US-led coalition military base in Iraq on February 15.

"America's recent actions have strengthened and expanded the terrorist activity of Daesh (Islamic State) in the region," said Iranian Supreme National Security Council Secretary Ali Shamkhani, in his remarks on a visit to Iraqi Foreign Minister Fuad Hussein.

Shamkhani said we would face the United States' plan to revive terrorism in the region, but did not elaborate.

An Iraqi militia official close to Iran said the attack killed one fighter and injured four others. US officials say they have limited room to show that President Joe Biden's administration will act decisively while trying to avoid a major regional escalation.

The air strikes targeted pro-Iran militia sites on the Syrian side of the Iraq-Syria border, where Iran-backed groups control critical crossings for weapons, personnel and goods.

Western officials and several Iraqi officials have accused Iranian-backed groups of involvement in deadly rocket attacks on sites and personnel of the United States and its coalition in Iraq over the past month.
