Bad News From West Papua, Extremely Poor Population There Reaches 39,357 People

JAKARTA - The number of poor people in five districts in West Papua Province reaches 39,357 people and is a priority for solving extreme poverty in 2021.

Vice President Ma'ruf Amin in Manokwari, Thursday, said reducing extreme poverty is part of the government's priority to reduce the poverty rate to zero percent by 2024.

"The five regions in this province are Teluk Wondama Regency, Teluk Bintuni, Tambraw, Maybrat, and South Manokwari Regency", said the Vice President at a coordination meeting for extreme poverty reduction in 2021 at the West Papua Governor's office in Manokwari.

The vice president said the selection of five priority districts in West Papua from 35 priority districts nationally in 2021 was based not only on the criteria for the percentage of extreme poverty levels but also combined with the number of extremely poor people in the region.

In addition, the Vice President continued, the measure of the extreme poverty rate refers to the definition of the World Bank and the United Nations, which is 1.9 US dollars PPP (purchasing power parity) per capita per day, below the general poverty rate used by Central Bureau of Statistics, namely 2.5 US dollars PPP per capita per day.

"Especially for the five districts in West Papua which are priorities in 2021, the number of extremely poor people reaches 39,357 people with a total of 12,440 RT extreme poor households", said the Vice President.

The number consists of Teluk Wondama Regency 24.0 percent with an extreme poverty rate of 4 percent and an extremely poor population of 7,960 people; Teluk Bintuni Regency with an extreme poverty rate of 21.05 percent and a total number of extremely poor people of 13,760.

Tambraw Regency has an extreme poverty rate of 22.40 percent, the number of extremely poor people is 3,140 people, Maybrat Regency has an extreme poverty rate of 22.89 percent and the number of extremely poor people is 9,520 people.

Meanwhile, South Manokwari Regency has an extreme poverty rate of 20.9 percent and an extremely poor population of 5,150 people.
