Pemiram Novel Baswedan Sentenced To 2 Years And 1.5 Years In Prison

JAKARTA - The defendant in the case of pouring hard water on Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) investigator Novel Baswedan, Rahmat Kadir Mahulette, was sentenced to 2 years in prison.

"The trial of the defendant has been legally and convincingly proven to have resulted in serious injuries, for two years in prison. Ordered the defendant to remain detained," said Chairman of the Panel of Judges Djumyanto at the North Jakarta District Court seen via live broadcast, Thursday, July 16.

Meanwhile, Rahmat's colleague, the defendant Ronny Bugis, was sentenced to 1 year 6 months or 1.5 years in prison.

"The trial of the defendant was legally and convincingly proven to cause serious injuries, for one year and six imprisonments. Ordered the defendant to remain detained," said Djumyanto.

The panel said that Rahmat Kadir Mahulette and Ronny Bugis were found guilty of violating Article 353 Paragraph (2) of the Criminal Code in conjunction with Article 55 paragraph (1) of the Criminal Code regarding pre-planned severe maltreatment.

This decision was read by Djumyanto in front of the public prosecutor (JPU) and the legal advisers of the two defendants. Meanwhile, the defendants Rahmat and Ronny were not presented in the courtroom, but heard the verdict via video conference.

After the verdict was read out, the two defendants who heard the verdict from the Kelapa Dua Police Mobile Brigade, Depok, West Java, stated that they accepted the verdict. "Thank you, Your Honor. I accept the verdict," said Rahmat.

"Thus the trial for reading the verdict on the criminal case of the defendants Rahmat and Ronny Lubis is declared closed," said the head of the panel of judges Djumyanto while tapping the hammer as a sign of ending the trial.

Previously it was reported that the sentence for this detention period was heavier than the charges. Previously, they were charged with 1 year in prison by the Public Prosecutor (JPU) Fedrik Adhar.

In the charges, the defendant Rahmat's actions were deemed proven to have fulfilled the elements of maltreatment with planning and resulted in serious injuries due to using sulfuric acid or H2SO4 to injure Novel Baswedan.

They watered the Novel on April 11, 2017 at Jalan Deposito Blok T, Pegangsaan Dua Subdistrict, Kelapa Gading District, North Jakarta at around 05.10 WIB. At that time, Novel had just left the Al-Ikhsan Mosque to return home.

Meanwhile, Rony is considered to have been involved in acts of persecution because he helped the persecution process. As a result, Novel's left eye was disabled for life.

Meanwhile, the thing that mitigated the charges, according to the prosecutor, was that the two defendants did not intend to injure Novel's face from the start. In addition, Ronny and Rahmat admitted their actions.

In addition, the prosecutor said there were things incriminating the two defendants, namely their actions which were considered to have tarnished the honor of the National Police institution. The two defendants taught Novel a lesson by seriously injuring him.
