Supporting Paris Agreement On Climate Change, Sampdoria Midfielder Morten Thorsby Changes Jersey Number
JAKARTA - Italian club Sampdoria midfielder Morten Thorsby has decided to wear the number 2 jersey this season to raise awareness about climate change.
The number 2 represents the long-term global temperature goal of the Paris Agreement. Under the Paris Agreement, nearly 200 countries have pledged to keep global warming well below 2 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial temperatures, and strengthen the global response to climate change.
Thorsby, who wore number 18 last season, said he wanted to "use my life to fight for what is important".
"I want to be better than everyone, but at the same time I have a side that says ''what are you doing?'," Thorsby told the BroPod Podcast earlier this week.
"We have a big environmental crisis and I play football, it doesn't make any sense.
"I spoke to my parents and we came to the conclusion that I want to use my life to fight for what is important and best. The thing I can do is to be as good as I can at football and keep talking about these important issues."
The Norway international has also founded the “We Play Green” foundation which encourages the football community to adopt eco-friendly concepts.
