The 5.3 Earthquake Vibration In Padanglawas, North Sumatra Feels Like A Truck Passing

JAKARTA - Head of the BMKG Earthquake and Tsunami Center, Bambang Setiyo, said the 5.3 magnitude earthquake that rocked North Padanglawas, North Sumatra, Wednesday, August 11 at 12.19 WIB, did not have the potential for a tsunami.

Bambang in his written statement said that the preliminary information showed that the earthquake had a magnitude of 5.3 which was then updated to a magnitude of 5.2.

The epicenter of the earthquake is located at coordinates 1.41° South Latitude; 99.41° East Longitude, or precisely located on land at a distance of 16 km east of Padangsidempuan City, North Sumatra at a depth of 15 km.

By taking into account the location of the epicenter and the depth of the hypocenter, the earthquake that occurred was a shallow type of earthquake due to the activity of the Sumatran Fault in the Toru Segment.

The results of the analysis of the source mechanism show that the earthquake has a horizontal movement mechanism.

The earthquake shock was felt in the areas of Aek Godang-North Padanglawas, Batang Toru and Padang Sidempuhan V MMI (the tremor was felt by almost all residents, many people woke up).

This earthquake has the potential to be felt in the Padanglawas and Tapanuli Tengah III MMI areas (the vibration was felt in the house, the vibration felt as if a truck was passing).

So far, there have been no reports of damage caused by the earthquake. The modeling results show that the earthquake did not have the potential to cause a tsunami.
