Joe Biden's Praise For The Olympics Became Suga's Confidence
JAKARTA - The President of the United States (US), Joe Biden praised Japanese Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga for Japan's success in holding the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. Biden's praise included how Japan implemented health protocols during the event.
"President Biden commended the performance of all athletes and highlighted the success of the Japan and US Olympics. Public health steps are being taken so that Olympic athletes can compete in the best possible traditions of the Olympic spirit," the White House said in a statement.
Biden's words became an important injection of encouragement for Suga. Because, during the handling of the COVID-19 pandemic, the Japanese people's trust in Suga was below 30 percent.
That percentage is the worst during Suga's tenure since September last year. However, thanks to the success of organizing the Olympics, little by little people's trust returned to Suga.
In a recent survey, the Yomiuri Daily showed that the Japanese people were quite happy with the Olympics reaching 64 percent. While those who do not agree are only 28 percent.
Previously, Suga was a key ally for Biden in fighting China's seemingly hands-off treatment of the pandemic. US Secretary of State Antony Blinken has met Japanese Security Adviser Takeo Akiba in Washington.
Both emphasized the importance of the alliance between the US and Japan in maintaining peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait.
