Bank Mandiri: Motorcycle Sales Increased By 1,065 Percent, Proof That Last Year's PSBB Was Tighter

JAKARTA - PT Bank Mandiri Tbk. reported that based on the Indonesian Motorcycle Industry Association (AISI) sales of two-wheeled vehicles in May 2021 were recorded at 254,700 units.

Bank Mandiri Chief Economist Andry Asmoro said the number rose 1,065.7 percent compared to the same period the previous year with 21,800 units.

"This happened because last year the implementation of the PSBB (large-scale social restrictions) was strict which resulted in a decline in economic activity," he said in an official release on Thursday, June 24.

Although year on year (yoy) of May period showed growth, monthly (month to month) motorcycle sales were observed to decline.

Meanwhile, for the April 2021 period, total sales were recorded at 472,800 units. As for March 2021, there were 521,400 units.

"Cumulatively, domestic motorcycle sales from January to May 2021 were recorded at 2.02 million units or grew by 17.8 percent yoy," he said.

In detail, the largest market share of domestic motorcycle sales by type is the automatic scooter or scooter sales category, which is 86.9 percent. Then, sales of scooters until May 2021 were recorded at 1.4 million units.

Next, followed by sales of motorcycles with a market share of 7.0 percent or 111,000 units sold, and motorsport sales of 6.0 percent of total motorcycle sales or 95,200 units.
