Telegram Temporarily Disappeared from Apple's App Store, Restored After Child Abuse Content Was Removed

JAKARTA - The Telegram messaging application disappeared from the Apple App Store for some time on Monday, August 3, US time, after Apple found content that violated guidelines regarding child sexual abuse material (CSAM).

The application was then made available again on the App Store after Telegram deleted the content in question and blocked the user accounts that uploaded it.

Reports of Telegram's disappearance from the App Store began to appear on social media around 21:30 EDT. Users who searched for Telegram on the App Store or opened a direct link to the app found that the app was no longer available for download.

In a statement to AppleInsider, Apple explained that the removal was a temporary measure.

"We temporarily removed Telegram from the App Store after the review process found content that violated our strict guidelines regarding the prohibition of sexual harassment material against children. The application was then restored after the developer quickly deleted the content and blocked the user who uploaded it," Apple said.

Apple did not explain in detail the type of content found or how long the content was on the platform. However, the company indicated that the temporary removal was made so that new users could not download the application during the handling process.

Users who have previously installed Telegram are not affected by the temporary removal and can still use the application as usual.

Around 22:10 EDT, Telegram was again available on the App Store after the moderation process was completed.

Apple has long been known to enforce strict policies against apps found to contain CSAM. The company can suspend the distribution of an app until the developer takes action to remove the offending content and ensure compliance with App Store guidelines.

Telegram is one of the popular messaging apps as an alternative to WhatsApp, Messenger, and iMessage. This service is known for being available on various platforms and offering security features, including end-to-end encryption options for certain conversations.

The incident once again highlights the challenges facing digital platforms in moderating user-generated content as well as the obligation to immediately take action against material that violates the law and endangers children.
