Indonesian Embassy in Tokyo Dispatches Aid for Indonesian Citizens in Kumamoto

JAKARTA - The Embassy of the Republic of Indonesia (KBRI) Tokyo provided assistance to Indonesian citizens (WNI) who were affected by the earthquake in Kumamoto Prefecture, Japan on Saturday.

The Indonesian Embassy in Tokyo Emergency Response Team, led by the First Secretary of the Consular Protocol Function of the Indonesian Embassy in Tokyo, Hernawan Bagaskoro Abid, has provided assistance to various groups of Indonesian people affected by the earthquake in Uki City and Uto City, Kumamoto Prefecture.

The assistance consists of various basic needs such as drinking water, instant noodles, rice, and medicines that are indeed scarce in the earthquake-affected areas. The distribution of assistance was carried out in cooperation with PPI Kumamoto and Fumaku.

The Indonesian Ambassador to Japan, Nurmala Kartini Sjahrir, explained that the dispatch of the KBRI Tokyo Emergency Response Team to the disaster site to help directly the knots of the Indonesian people in the distribution of the assistance needed by a number of Indonesian citizens who are spread across several shelters.

"Since the beginning of the Kumamoto Earthquake on July 28, 2026, the Indonesian Embassy in Tokyo has continued to coordinate with community nodes in Kumamoto. Coordination is carried out to find out the condition of all Indonesian citizens who live in Kumamoto," he explained, launching the statement from the Indonesian Embassy in Tokyo (3/8).

"These community knots have helped the Indonesian Embassy in Tokyo to jointly conduct data collection and distribution of the needs of Indonesian citizens affected by the earthquake. The Tokyo Embassy Emergency Response Team will continue to move to several points in the earthquake-affected area to provide assistance directly to Indonesian citizens," continued Ambassador Kartini.

Ambassador Kartini urged Indonesian citizens "to remain vigilant given that aftershocks are still ongoing" and to follow "the instructions of local authorities."

"The Indonesian Embassy in Tokyo Emergency Response Team continues to monitor the condition of Indonesian citizens in Kumamoto and provide direct assistance to Indonesian citizens in need. We are very grateful to the knots of the community who help handle assistance for Indonesian citizens," explained Ambassador Kartini.

"The Indonesian Embassy in Tokyo expressed deep concern over the disaster that occurred in Kumamoto and appreciated the solidarity, unity, and fighting spirit of the Indonesian community in Kumamoto to mutually strengthen each other," he added.

It is known that an earthquake with a magnitude of 7.1 shook Kumamoto Prefecture on July 28.

Although Kumamoto's community activities have started to stir, some logistical needs and public facilities are still not running normally.

The purchase of basic necessities is also still limited given the situation and conditions and the logistics system at the affected locations which are still not fully stable.

The Indonesian Embassy in Tokyo and the Indonesian Consulate General in Osaka continue to monitor the development of the situation and coordinate with Japanese authorities, as well as Indonesian communities in the affected areas.
