OIC asks Colombia to cancel plans to open embassy in Jerusalem
JAKARTA - The Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) has condemned the Colombian government's plan to reportedly open an embassy in Israel's occupied Jerusalem.
The organization assessed that the move was contrary to international law and United Nations (UN) resolutions.
In a statement issued on Thursday, July 16, the OKI General Secretariat called the plan a regrettable setback from Colombia's historic position of supporting the legitimate rights of the Palestinian people.
OKI emphasized that this step has the potential to harm relations and common interests between Colombia and OKI member countries as stipulated in various resolutions of the organization.
As reported by ANTARA from WAFA-OANA, the OKI General Secretariat expressed its rejection of the move which was considered illegal because it was considered a blatant violation of UN resolutions, especially Security Council Resolutions No. 476 and 478.
Both resolutions affirm that all Israeli actions aimed at changing the character, legal status, or demographic composition of Jerusalem have no legal force and are null and void. The resolution also calls on all countries to move their diplomatic missions from the holy city.
OKI meminta pemerintah Kolombia membatalkan rencana tersebut serta terus mendukung berbagai upaya internasional untuk mewujudkan perdamaian berdasarkan solusi dua negara.
The organization also called on Colombia to continue to carry out its responsibilities in accordance with the UN Charter and various relevant UN resolutions on the status of Jerusalem.
