Bandung People's School Built in a Cool Area and Has Three Retention Ponds

JAKARTA - The Ministry of Public Works (PU) is building the West Java II People's School (SR) in Soreang District, Bandung Regency, West Java Province, in a highland area with relatively cool air.

Not only offering a comfortable learning environment, the school is also equipped with three retention ponds to control flooding during high rainfall.

Minister PU Dody Hanggodo said that the construction of SR is a form of the government's commitment to expanding access to quality education as well as being a long-term investment to build Indonesian human resources.

"The construction of this People's School is a tangible form of the government's commitment to building superior human resources," said Dody, quoted from a written statement, Friday, July 10.

Dody added, the PU Ministry wants to ensure that these educational facilities are built quickly and with quality, so that they can immediately be used by the community and support the equalization of access to education.

Head of the West Java Strategic Infrastructure Implementation Unit (Satker) Tomi Hendratno said that in addition to being in an area with relatively cool temperatures, the Bandung Regency People's School also has strategic access.

"In terms of accessibility, the location is quite close to the Soreang Toll Gate, about 10 minutes. Then, it is also close to the Bandung Regency Government Center. The climate or temperature is also relatively cool and comfortable for teaching and learning activities," said Tomi.

Tomi added that the PU Ministry also designed school areas to remain safe during the rainy season.

For this reason, an integrated drainage system was built which was equipped with three retention ponds to accommodate rainwater runoff.

"One of the advantages of the Bandung Regency People's School is that we built three retention ponds in the site area to control flooding when the rainfall is high enough. So, the water from the drainage system of the area does not overflow into the residents' settlements," he explained.

The three retention ponds have an area of around 620 square meters, 710 square meters and 240 square meters.

The capacity of each is 1,550 cubic meters, 1,775 cubic meters and 600 cubic meters.

To pursue the target of completion before the 2026/2027 New Academic Year, the PU Ministry has implemented a number of acceleration strategies, including increasing the number of workers and dividing the work into three shifts. Thus, the construction process can last 24 hours.

In addition, the finishing work on several buildings was accelerated by replacing the plaster and shaft methods into a stick on wall system using UPVC material.

The PU Ministry also ensures that the supply of construction materials and equipment is available according to the needs of the project.

Currently, the progress of the SR Bandung Regency has reached 84.8 percent.

The school, which was built on an area of 6.5 hectares with a total building area of 26,876.43 square meters, has a contract value of Rp. 264.7 billion.

The education area will be equipped with school buildings for elementary, middle and high schools, male and female dormitories, teachers' apartments, mosques, multipurpose buildings, kitchens, canteens, sports fields and various other supporting facilities to support teaching and learning activities.
