Mandiri Jogja Marathon 2026: Not Just Running But Economic Impact

YOGYAKARTA - Mandiri Jogja Marathon (MJM) 2026 is not just a running race or fun run that is followed by more than 10,200 participants from 17 countries. The running event, which carries the theme More Than a Race, which reaches its peak on Sunday, June 21, 2026 in the Candi Prambanan area, Yogyakarta, is able to have an economic and social impact.

Mandiri Jogja Marathon (MJM) which this year broke the record for participants since it was first held in 2017 is divided into four race categories. Runners participate in the Marathon (42K), Half Marathon (21K), 10K, and 5K Fun Run with a track that has been certified by the Association of International Marathons and Distance Races (AIMS).

Interestingly, this year's event presents a running experience that combines sports, culture, tourism, sustainability, and economic empowerment in one integrated series of activities.

This makes participants not only experience running, but the opportunity to enjoy the richness of culture and the beauty of Yogyakarta's typical landscape. The route is traversed by a number of cultural icons, such as Plaosan Temple, Taruna Monument, and rural areas that also play an active role in supporting the organization of the event.

"MJM gave me valuable experience when I performed in the Half Marathon in Indonesia. The route I took was quite challenging and interesting. More than that, the response from the residents who shouted, 'Kenya ... Kenya ...', when I passed. They seemed to know many runners from Kenya like me," said Peter Ndungu Wanyoike, a Kenyan runner who ranked fourth in the Half Marathon.

"It's a disappointing result, but it's a learning experience when I come back to the MJM next year. I'll come with the goal of winning," said Peter, who ran in the MJM for the first time.

In the men's sector, runner Kiprono Koech came out as the first champion in the Full Marathon Open MJM 2026 category with a time of 02:20:28, followed by Amos Kipkemoi Chesang, and James Cherutich Tallam.

Meanwhile, in the women's sector, runner Eunice Nyawira Muchiri finished ahead with a time of 02:39:35, ahead of Medanit Feyera Gurmesa and Elizabeth Chepkanan Rumokol in 2nd and 3rd place. The dominance of these international athletes again confirms MJM's position as a world-class running event.

In the Full Marathon National (Closed Marathon) category, Indonesian runners performed impressively. Rikki Marthin L Simbolon managed to take first place in the men's sector with a time of 02:30:06, followed by Immanuel Hutasoit, and Laode Safrudin.

In the women's sector, Dwi Tiansi Anggraini came out as the champion with a time of 03:04:55, beating Ina Lydia Utari Damanik, and Asnida Aras. This achievement shows the improvement in the quality of national runners as well as the high enthusiasm for sports tourism which is growing in Indonesia.

Bank Mandiri Corporate Secretary Adhika Vista said that MJM has evolved into more than a sports event. According to him, MJM is a collaboration platform that connects communities, local business actors, local governments, to the community to jointly create sustainable economic and social impacts.

"MJM is a form of integrated synergy between Bank Mandiri, the community, MSMEs, and local governments. We want every runner's step to have a real impact on the environment and society, so that MJM really exists as More Than a Race," said Adhika.

Adhika said that as a tangible form of the spirit of "More Than a Race", the company also strengthened the empowerment of the community's economy through a digital financial literacy program for MSMEs in the vicinity of the implementation area to encourage the adoption of digital transactions and increase business capacity.

This effort is complemented by the Mandiri LAKU LOKAL (mLaku Lokal) program at the Race Village in the Prambanan Temple area which presents 27 local brands and 70 UMKM tenants as a promotional space for Yogyakarta culinary and creative economy business actors.

Not only that, Bank Mandiri also carried out local economic empowerment through the implementation of the UMKM Festival which involved around 60 UMKM players who were domiciled around Prambanan Temple. Bank Mandiri also strengthened the aspect of economic empowerment through the Ngasem Market UMKM Literacy.

On the social and cultural side, this gold ribbon logo bank rolled out a series of Social and Environmental Responsibility (TJSL) programs with the theme "Walking Together, Building Jogja".

Through Mandiri Bakti Kesehatan, the company presents a Mini General Check Up for 1,650 Abdi Dalem in Puro Pakualaman, Puralaya Imogiri, and Keraton Ngayogyakarta, as well as Mass Circumcision for 280 children around Prambanan.

Bank Mandiri also presents the Mandiri Sahabat Desa activity, with implementation in the form of road repairs, village boundary construction and village clean-up actions in 28 villages along the MJM route as well as the distribution of 2,800 food packages.

Meanwhile, cultural preservation is realized through the "Pustaka Luhur, Access for All" program in the form of digitization of ancient manuscripts of the Widyapustaka Pakualaman collection. This series emphasizes sustainable excellence as well as strengthening the ecosystem for the community.

"Through the Mandiri Jogja Marathon, we want to present a celebration that not only enjoyed by runners, but also able to create added value for the community, environment, and regional economy in a sustainable manner," said Adhika.
