EU Welcomes Iran-US Deal, Hopes for Immediate Opening of Strait of Hormuz
JAKARTA - President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen welcomed the agreement reached by the United States and Iran, hoping that it "should allow the immediate reopening of the Strait of Hormuz."
"Freedom of navigation must be restored without toll costs. This is important for regional stability and the global economy," he said in a statement on Monday, launching CNN (15/6).
Von der Leyen added that there was a need to look at different supply routes and "diversify from the Strait of Hormuz bottleneck" and this would be discussed at a Group of Seven (G7) meeting starting today in France.
Meanwhile, the head of the European Union's Foreign Policy Kaja Kallas also welcomed the agreement, saying EU foreign ministers would discuss how the organization could be involved in the next steps.
"I have spoken with my colleagues from Iran and the Gulf countries in recent days, and today, the EU Foreign Ministers will discuss how the EU can be closely involved in the next phase," he said on X.
As previously reported, Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif said on Sunday, "The Peace Deal between the United States and the Islamic Republic of Iran has been reached."
"Both sides have declared an immediate and permanent cessation of military operations on all fronts, including in Lebanon," Prime Minister Sharif said in a social media post on Sunday night.
"The official signing ceremony will be held on Friday, June 19 in Switzerland," added the Prime Minister of Pakistan, while thanking Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and Turkey for their assistance in the "mediation efforts."
"With this agreement, the mediators will facilitate a series of meetings this week," concluded PM Sharif's post.
"This pre-implementation discussion will lay the foundation for technical talks and the official signing ceremony," he said.
US President Donald Trump then announced a peace deal with Iran had been reached and the United States would end its naval blockade of the country, marking the most significant development in months of negotiations.
"The deal with the Islamic Republic of Iran is now complete. Congratulations to all!" President Trump stated in a post on Truth Social.
In turn, Iran's Deputy Foreign Minister for Legal and International Affairs Kazem Gharibabadi said the text of the memorandum of understanding with the United States had been finalized and would be officially signed on Friday in Switzerland.
Later, the Secretariat of the Supreme National Security Council (SNSC) of Iran confirmed the existence of a memorandum of understanding (MoU) mediated by Pakistan to end the war with the United States.
SNSC emphasized that based on the MoU, wars and military operations on all fronts, including Lebanon, would be immediately and permanently stopped starting Sunday night. In addition, the US naval blockade of Iran would be immediately and completely lifted.
