Against the Culture of Bungkam, Marshanda and Ibnu Jamil Duel in the Film When I Speak

JAKARTA - The issue of sexual violence, which is often overshadowed by stigma and "culture of silence" in society, is again brought to the big screen. Arjuna Mega Films, Rain Creation, and Lex Pictures are ready to release the latest drama film titled When I Speak, which is scheduled to be released simultaneously in cinemas starting June 18, 2026.

Directed by Sonu Samtani with a script by Tisa TS, this film is not just a mere entertainment. When I Speak, carries a big mission to voice the wounds of survivors who have often been forced to be silent by a system and a social environment that does not side with the victims.

Synopsis: The Struggle for Justice in the Middle of Trauma

This film highlights the life of Nadia (played by Marshanda), a talented young lawyer with a rising career. Nadia's life seems perfect, especially after she is proposed to by her lover, Reza (Nino Fernandez).

However, the inner turmoil began to approach Nadia when the law firm where she worked actually won a sexual violence case involving the son of an influential businessman. Ironically, shortly thereafter, a heartbreaking tragedy befell Nadia when she tried to help her best friend, Andien (Rini Yulianti).

In an effort to restore life and demand justice, Nadia is not alone. She is accompanied by Andien, Riana (Hana Malasan), and Adrian (Ibnu Jamil) - a Public Prosecutor who has his own trauma against the disability of the legal system.

Not only about the law, this film also touches on the humanistic side of how Nadia struggles to improve her relationship with her father (Teuku Rifnu Wikana).

Marshanda and Ibnu Jamil Reunion After 16 Years

One of the main attractions of this film is the return of Marshanda to the big screen as the main character. Interestingly, When I Speak is a reunion event for Marshanda and Ibnu Jamil. The two of them are back acting in one long film project after last working together in a soap opera title more than 16 years ago.

In addition to the duet of Marshanda and Ibnu Jamil, this film is also strengthened by a line-up of qualified cross-generational actors. Starting from senior actress Lydia Kandou, Cut Mini who plays Ibu Nadia, to Lukman Sardi, Omar Daniel, and Unique Priscilla.

Bringing Hope Through Wide Screen

When I Speak is a form of resistance against legal inequality and negative stigma that often ostracizes survivors. This film wants to show that the courage to speak is the first step of a change.

Through a strong narrative, the audience is invited to understand the importance of a support system from family and friends, as well as the importance of standing up for the truth even though hopes seem to fade.
