Film Review Disclosure Day: When Science Fiction is Wrapped in Political Conflict

JAKARTA - The film Disclosure Day is the latest offering from director Steven Spielberg that is eagerly awaited. In addition to being made by a famous name in the world of film, this film also marks Spielberg's return to working on a science fiction story.

Disclosure Day tells the story of Dr. Daniel Kellner (Josh O'Connor), a cyber security employee at WARDEX who steals confidential data. He is hunted down and pursued by Noah Scanlon (Colin Firth), the head of WARDEX who is trying to hunt down Daniel because he is afraid that the secret will cause a violent reaction.

On the other hand, Margaret Fairchild (Emily Blunt) is a weather reporter who wants to pursue a position as a lead news anchor. Margaret and her lover argue because her lover also has a career to pursue.

In the midst of the conflict, Margaret experiences a strange incident that brings her together with Hugo Wakefield (Colman Domingo), a former WARDEX employee who tries to uncover something. The relationship between the characters will develop what is happening with humans and the universe.

It's not difficult to understand the film Disclosure Day which from the beginning displays a mysterious side and sows puzzles. Instead of presenting scientific theories that seem theoretical, Steven Spielberg makes a chase between the corporation and the community.

In terms of duration, the film has a layered story layer that makes the film run quite slowly. The first half is filled with mystery between Daniel Keller and Noah Scanlon.

The second half is filled with explanations of character relationships and scientific phenomena that occur around them. From the beginning, the director tried to bring up the question of whether humans can face the reality that there is life that turns out to live out there.

The film is easy to understand, but on the one hand the slow pace makes the journey tend to be boring. The narrative of the evil government against a group of people is always interesting to explore, but not always impressive.

In terms of acting, various actors show their best parts but Emily Blunt's acting is one of the most impressive parts of this film. Blunt, who was initially shown as someone who knows nothing until he undergoes a transition, caught attention with his emotional and expressive appeal.

All of these are combined with quality visuals and complemented by music from John Williams that further impresses the film.

The film Disclosure Day not only discusses the alien world in a clear way but about exploring how humans try to understand something.

Meanwhile, the film Disclosure Day will be shown in Indonesian cinemas starting Wednesday, June 10, 2026.
