Population is Increasingly Worried, DKI Provincial Government Expands Operation to Hunt for Fish in Jakarta

JAKARTA - The DKI Jakarta Provincial Government (Pemprov) is preparing a major strategy to expand the operation of fishing nets in various waters of the capital.

This step is a direct instruction from the Governor of DKI Jakarta, Pramono Anung, to reduce the population of invasive species which are considered to damage the ecosystem and river infrastructure.

Head of the DKI Jakarta Food, Maritime, and Agriculture Agency (KPKP), Hasudungan Sidabalok, revealed that his party is currently carrying out internal consolidation.

Coordination is carried out together with all ranks of the tribe of the service at the regional level to map the crucial points that will be the target of the next arrest operation.

"Another consolidation. Now we are preparing again with the region (each tribe of the service). The determination of the location is considered important so that the handling can be more directed and effective," Hasudungan told reporters in Jakarta, Tuesday, April 14, 2026.

In addition to the technical arrest, the DKI Provincial Government also implements very strict destruction procedures.

Considering the very high life-span of the fish, officers must ensure that the fish is completely dead before burying it in a representative location.

This step was taken to prevent potential misuse of fish carcasses by irresponsible parties.

Governor Pramono Anung previously highlighted the adverse impact of the uncontrolled population of sapu-sapu fish. In addition to damaging river embankments, these fish also dominate food sources, threatening the existence of other local fish species.

Although the cleaning action in the Cideng River some time ago had a positive impact, Pramono assessed that this effort must be carried out on an ongoing basis.

"So yesterday there were quite a lot, but it was impossible to immediately finish. But this, in my opinion, is something that is beneficial and makes a positive contribution," said Pramono when reviewing the East Jakarta area, Sunday, April 12, 2026.

Pramono reminded that allowing this fish population would only aggravate the damage to the Jakarta water ecosystem.

Therefore, expanding operations to all regions is a priority agenda for the DKI Provincial Government to maintain the balance of the environment and the strength of the river infrastructure in the future.
