UI Condemns Alleged Sexual Harassment in Law Student Chat Group
JAKARTA - The University of Indonesia strongly condemns the alleged sexual harassment that emerged from the conversations of a number of students of the Faculty of Law (FH UI) in a chat group, and ensures that it is conducting a thorough investigation.
Through an official statement uploaded on the X @hukumUI account, FH UI said it had received reports regarding the circulation of screenshots of conversations that allegedly contained inappropriate content, including indications of sexual violence.
"The faculty strongly condemns all forms of behavior that degrade human dignity and are contrary to the values of academic law and ethics. Currently, the faculty is conducting a serious, careful, and thorough search and verification," wrote the UI Faculty, quoted by VOI.ID Monday, April 13.
FH UI emphasized that the handling process was carried out with the principles of caution and fairness. If violations are found, including those that have the potential to fall into the realm of criminal law, the faculty states that it will take firm action in accordance with the rules and coordinate with the authorities.
"The safety and comfort of all academic staff is a top priority. A safe reporting channel and the necessary support are available for those in need," the statement continued.
FH UI also appealed to the public not to spread unverified information and to respect the ongoing process.
This case came to light after the FH UI topic became a widespread discussion on the X social media, triggered by the upload of the @sampahfhui account which shared a screenshot of a student group conversation. In the upload, it was mentioned that there was a practice of objectification of women that was carried out repeatedly, even allegedly involving a number of campus organization managers.
The upload drew widespread criticism from netizens, including from parents of university students, who highlighted the importance of ethics and protection of victims in the academic environment.
