Man Utd Lose to Newcastle, Carrick: Disappointing Performance

JAKARTA - Manchester United failed to take advantage of the momentum to extend the unbeaten record when facing Newcastle United. In the English Premier League match at St James' Park Stadium, Thursday, March 5, 2026 WIB early morning, Man Utd was defeated by Newcastle's 10 players 2-1. Interim manager Michael Carrick called Man Utd's performance really disappointing.

It's not Man Utd's unbeaten record that finally broke. But the team's very poor performance made Carrick angry and disappointed. Moreover, the opponent played with 10 people after Jacob Ramsey got a second yellow card followed by a red card for diving in the penalty box.

However, after losing Ramsey, the Magpies were able to break the Senne Lamens goal shortly afterwards. The goal came from a penalty point that was completed by Anthony Gordon in injury time in the first half or minute 45+6. Newcastle got a penalty gift because captain Bruno Fernandes knocked Gordon himself in the penalty box.

Man Utd was able to quickly recover. Before the first half ended, they were able to equalize through veteran midfielder Casemiro. Fernandes paid for his mistake by giving an assist that was completed by Casemiro through a header that changed the score to 1-1.

However, the Red Devils failed to maintain their performance and conceded again in the last minute. This time, substitute William Osula brought Newcastle ahead 2-1 and the score remained until the end of the match.

"We are really disappointed with the team's performance in that game. We were really able to control the game. But Newcastle deserve credit for being able to deal with it," said Carrick.

"We knew this game would not be easy but we were able to dominate and should have won it, but we couldn't do it. It's really disappointing," he said again.

Carrick said he would not look for excuses for the defeat. According to him, everyone is responsible for the failure. He also hopes the team will play better in the next match.

"This is not a matter of facing 10 players. We didn't play well enough. There's no need to find excuses for this defeat. We are all responsible for the result," said Carrick.

"We suffered a defeat because we didn't play well. However, we hope that it will be better in the next match. We will come back and work hard to win the match. We can do it because we are a good team. On the other hand, this match is not ours," he said.

The defeat did not change Man Utd's position which remained in third place with 51 points. The reason is that Aston Villa, who has the same points, also suffered a crushing defeat of 4-1 against Chelsea. Man Utd is ahead of the goal difference with Villa in fourth place. Followed by Chelsea with 48 points.

Meanwhile, Newcastle managed to climb one strip to occupy the 12th position. The team coached by Eddie Howe got 39 points. This is a valuable capital for Newcastle who will face strong opponents Manchester City in the fifth round this weekend.
