Iga Swiatek Sets Bagel Record While Shutting Out Janice Tjen
JAKARTA - World number two tennis player Iga Swiatek managed to set a bagel record when defeating Indonesian female tennis player Janice Tjen in the second round of the 2026 Qatar Open WTA competition.
The Polish tennis player, who is the first seed and has been ranked number one in the world, continued his journey to the third round after winning 6-0 and 6-3 at the Khalifa International Tennis and Squash Complex, Doha, Qatar, on Tuesday, February 10, 2026, WIB.
"It's always nice to start a tournament in a solid way. I'm ready for every game," said Swiatek, who got a bye in the first round, reported from the WTA official website.
In addition to being able to maintain the hope of winning the tournament, the 6-0 (bagel) victory in the first set made Swiatek break the record.
That was the 36th bagel he recorded in a WTA 1000 level, the most of any other player since the format was introduced in 2009.
After the match, Swiatek was asked why he didn't think about giving his opponent a game in the first set, but he said that in a match he always wanted to perform at his best.
"I think when I was young, I thought like that, but then, you just want to win the game. It's a sport. It doesn't make sense to play only 80 percent," he said.
The latest result makes Swiatek increase the number of victories to 23 in Doha and Dubai. Only former world number one Caroline Wozniacki has more (25 wins) since the WTA 1000 format was introduced in 2009.
In addition, Swiatek also extended his winning streak in the opening match of the WTA 1000 tournament to 32 since losing in Cincinnati in 2021 against Ons Jabeur.
On the other hand, this latest defeat extends Janice's unpleasant record in major tournaments. He also crashed out in the second round in his debut at the WTA 500 in Abu Dhabi last week.
Previously, the Jakarta-born tennis player also crashed in the same phase at the 2026 Australian Open Grand Slam in January. When he made his debut at the US Open last year, he also went home in the second round.
