PP TUNAS Becomes a Reference for Malaysia to Implement Age Restrictions for Social Media Users

JAKARTA - Deputy Minister of Communications of Malaysia, YB Teo Nie Ching, revealed that Indonesia is an important reference for Malaysia in formulating regulations on age restrictions for children on digital platforms, especially social media.

Through Government Regulation Number 17 of 2025 concerning the Governance of the Implementation of Electronic Systems in Child Protection (PP TUNAS), he assessed Indonesia's approach to regulating the age of children in a more specific and adaptive manner to the characteristics of each digital platform.

"We are paying attention to the direction from Ibu Meutya that will set different age limits for different social media platforms. I would like to take this opportunity to understand the mechanisms and approaches you will do," said YB Teo.

He also explained that Malaysia had announced a policy to limit the age of children in the use of social media with a minimum age of 16 years for all platforms.

Currently, YB Teo added, the Malaysian government is carrying out a regulatory sandbox trial phase involving digital platform providers.

"Through this sandbox, we want to test which mechanism is the most effective and provides the best results. We hope that this process can be completed in the first half of this year, so that starting July the age restriction can be enforced and platforms are required to verify the age of users," he explained.

Meanwhile, Deputy Minister of Communication and Information Nezar Patria explained that the PP TUNAS was designed as a comprehensive policy framework to ensure a safe digital space for children, while opening up opportunities for closer regional cooperation.

According to him, within a broader framework, Indonesia sees great potential for cooperation between Indonesia and Malaysia through sharing experiences, exchanging best practices, and mutual learning in digital governance.

"We believe that through open dialogue and cooperation, Indonesia and Malaysia can provide a strong example of regional partnership in the digital era," said Nezar.
