KLH Evaluates Environmental Compliance of Mining Activities in 14 Provinces

JAKARTA - Minister of Environment (LH) Hanif Faisol Nurofiq said he would evaluate mining activities in 14 provinces to ensure compliance with environmental regulations.

In a meeting with the Association of Regional DPRD of All Indonesia (ADKASI), the Minister of LH/Head of the Environment Control Agency (BPLH) Hanif conveyed to the heads of the DPRD highlighting the need for supervision of mining activities whose activities have an impact on the environment.

"Nickel mines, coal mines, wislahditengok. This damage is also not small and we have also started. So for this year we are targeting 14 major provinces, completing the evaluation and legal action," said Hanif as reported by ANTARA, Wednesday, January 14.

The enforcement of the law will begin with an evaluation activity carried out through direct and indirect verification, with inspections also carried out using high-resolution satellite imagery.

"We will evaluate 14 provinces. The results of the evaluation will not be followed up with supervision. In supervision, we will give him administrative sanctions for environmental audits," he explained.

Hanif himself has not detailed the 14 provinces that are the target of evaluation for compliance with environmental regulations.

Environmental audits have previously been carried out on a number of mining companies. With Minister Hanif giving an example of an audit conducted on PT Gag Nickel in Raja Ampat, West Papua.

He gave an example of issues often found in environmental audits in companies, including inadequate water governance.

KLH ensures that in the evaluation and then supervision, if there are allegations of violations such as activities that are not included in environmental documents, then his party can take further legal steps such as civil lawsuits.
