US Secretary of State to Meet Denmark Next Week on Situation Regarding Greenland
JAKARTA - US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said on Wednesday that he would meet with Denmark next week regarding the development of the situation regarding Greenland.
This was said by Foreign Minister Rubio when President Donald Trump repeatedly said his desire to control the Danish autonomous region with security considerations in recent times.
"If the president identifies a threat to the national security of the United States, every president still has the option to address it through military means. As a diplomat, which is my current profession, and which is our job, we always prefer to solve it in a different way - including in Venezuela," said Foreign Minister Rubio to reporters when asked if the US was willing to risk the NATO alliance by continuing the military option, launching Al Arabiya (8/1).
Meanwhile, President Trump has "actively discussed" the purchase of Greenland from Denmark with his team, the White House said on Wednesday, but refused to rule out military action.
"That is something that is currently being actively discussed by the president and his national security team," Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt said at a news conference, when asked about a possible US bid to buy the self-governing territory.
When asked why President Trump did not rule out military action against fellow NATO members, Leavitt replied: "That's not something this president does. All options are always open to President Trump."
