Launching VOI, Purbaya was born in Bogor on July 7, 1964. Before being appointed as Minister of Finance, he was Chairman of the Board of Commissioners of the Savings Deposit Insurance Agency (LPS).
Purbaya has an interesting educational background. Although he is now known as an economist, his S1 degree actually comes from the engineering field.
He is an alumnus of the Bandung Institute of Technology (ITB). At this campus, Purbaya earned a degree in Electrical Engineering.
After graduating, Purbaya took a master's program in economics at Purdue University, USA. At the campus, Purbaya also earned a doctorate in economics.
Before plunging into government, Purbaya started his career at a private company. In 1989, he worked as a Field Engineer at Schlumberger Overseas SA, a multinational oilfield services company. Purbaya's career shift to the financial sector occurred in 2000 when he joined the Danareksa Research Institute. At the institution, he was trusted as a senior economist and was widely known for his in-depth and research-based economic analysis. This reputation led him to occupy the position of President Director of PT Danareksa Securities in the period 2006-2008.
In 2010, Purbaya began to be active in government by being appointed as a Special Staff for Economic Affairs at the Coordinating Ministry for Economic Affairs. In addition, he was also a member of the National Economic Committee.
