Billy Joel Performs on Stage for the First Time Since Suffering a Brain Disorder
Billy Joel gave an emotional surprise to his fans. The "Piano Man" singer returned to the stage for the first time since being diagnosed with a brain disorder that forced him to stop touring last May.
Wearing a black hat and a winter vest, the 76-year-old musician joined the Turnstiles tribute group. Joel's presence on stage is proof that his musical spirit has not faded even though his physical condition is no longer prime.
He performed two of his hit songs, "Big Shot" and "We Didn't Start the Fire", while playing the piano in front of a cheering audience.
Joel is not alone in the short 12-minute stage performance. He is accompanied by his wife, Alexis Roderick, and introduces his two young daughters, Della and Remy, who dance improvisationally on stage.
Joel's appearance was quite surprising, because he had to undergo intensive physical therapy due to Normal Pressure Hydrocephalus (NPH), a condition of fluid buildup in the brain that disrupts his balance.
Based on amateur videos circulating on social media, Joel asked for permission to join the band whose name was taken from one of his popular albums in the 1970s.
"I don't plan to work tonight," Joel said, laughing before starting his performance.
The event was actually the 30th anniversary celebration of Wellington Village, Florida, which was held in the city's amphitheater. Joel is known to have a house and farm in the area.
Even though he had to walk with the help of a cane while heading to the piano, Joel still showed his typical sense of humor. When the Turnstiles vocalist asked if he wanted to sing, Joel replied with a joke.
As is known, Billy Joel's health condition has begun to attract public attention since he canceled all his tour schedules in May 2025. In an interview with Bill Maher in July, Joel confirmed that he was feeling fine, except for the balance problem that made him fall on stage in February.
Despite being absent from the big stage, Joel's popularity continues to skyrocket this year thanks to the HBO documentary titled Billy Joel: And So It Goes, which has achieved critical and commercial success.
This surprise appearance in Florida seems to be a message that the legend has not really said goodbye to the world of performance.
