Indonesian Minister of Foreign Affairs: Cambodia and Thailand will Find a Peaceful Way through Dialogue with ASEAN Support
JAKARTA - Indonesian Foreign Minister Sugiono believes that Thailand and Cambodia will find a peaceful way out of the escalation that is currently taking place between the two through dialogue that is fully supported by ASEAN.
This was said by Foreign Minister Sugiono when attending the ASEAN Special Meeting of Foreign Ministers on the Situation between Cambodia and Thailand in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, Monday, to discuss the latest situation on the Cambodian-Thai border, which has become a common concern, since the escalation on December 8, 2025.
"In essence, Indonesia always believes that our two families in ASEAN, Cambodia and Thailand, will find a peaceful way through dialogue with the full support of ASEAN," said Indonesian Foreign Minister Sugiono in a statement from the Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Monday (22/12).
This special meeting was chaired by the Malaysian Foreign Minister as the ASEAN Chair and was attended by all ASEAN Member States' Foreign Ministers, except Myanmar which was represented by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs as a non-political representative, as well as Vietnam which was represented at the level of High Officials.
During the meeting, Indonesia appreciated Malaysia's role as the Chair of ASEAN and encouraged all parties to refrain, stop military action, and immediately return to dialogue and diplomacy in accordance with the ASEAN Charter and the spirit of ASEAN unity.
Indonesia also highlighted the loss of life, injuries, and the displacement of civilians on both sides of the border, assessing it as a serious humanitarian issue that must be addressed immediately.
Foreign Minister Sugiono also conveyed Indonesia's readiness to play a constructive role, including through the contribution of personnel to the ASEAN Observer Team, to help monitor the situation on the ground in accordance with the ASEAN mandate.
This meeting resulted in a Chair's Statement which reaffirmed ASEAN's commitment to unity and the centrality of ASEAN. The statement also calls on the parties concerned to restore trust and return to dialogue, both through bilateral mechanisms and with the facilitation of the ASEAN Chair.
