How Many Valves Does the Human Heart Have? What Are Their Functions? Check it out here

YOGYAKARTA - The heart is a vital organ in the body that functions to pump blood. The heart organ pumps blood which is then circulated throughout the body.

This organ consists of four muscle-lined chambers, including the right and left atria located at the top. As for the bottom, it is called the right ventricle and the left ventricle. In the four chambers of the heart, they are protected by heart valves that act as doors. So, how many valves does the human heart have? Check out the review below.

How Many Valves Does the Human Heart Have?

Reported from Healthline, heart valves are on each side of the space inside the heart. These valves have the function as the exit of the blood flow.

The heart valves work to move blood at the right time and place. When the heart valves open and close, the valves produce two sounds that we call heartbeats.

There are two types of valves in the heart, namely the atrioventricular valves that separate the atria and the ventricles. Then the semilunar valves which are located between each heart chamber and the artery. Both have two valves in them.

Trikuspidalis Valve

The tricuspid valve is a type of atrioventricular valve that separates the right atrium and the right ventricle.

When the tricuspid valve is open, blood flows from the right atrium to the right ventricle. This valve also has a function to prevent the flow from the right ventricle to the right atrium.

Mitral Valve (Bikuspidalis)

This valve is also still classified into the atrioventricular valve group and is located between the left atrium and the left ventricle of the heart.

The mitral valve has the function of pressing the door to let blood flow into the left atrium from the lungs. The mitral valve is also tasked with preventing backward flow from the left ventricle to the left atrium.

Aortic valve

The aortic valve belongs to the semilunar valve type that exists between the left ventricle and the aorta. The aorta itself is the largest blood vessel and is rooted in the left ventricle of the heart.

The task of the aorta is to circulate oxygenated blood from the heart to the rest of the body. This aortic valve is useful as a door that prevents blood flow from the aorta to the left ventricle.

Pulmonary Valve

Still from the semilunar valve section, the location of the pulmonary valve is between the right ventricle of the heart and the pulmonary artery.

The pulmonary valve will open when there is blood being pumped from the right ventricle to the lungs. The blood will pass through the pulmonary artery.

After the blood reaches the lungs, the blood will release carbon dioxide and receive oxygen. This oxygen-carrying blood is then carried to the aorta.

Tips to Keep the Heart Valve Healthy

Heart valve health must certainly be maintained so that the heart can pump blood smoothly. If the heart valves do not function perfectly, the heart needs more effort to be able to flow blood smoothly.

There are several ways that can be done to maintain heart valve health, including:

Manage food consumption, avoid high cholesterol foodsExercise regularlyAvoid smokingMaintain dental and gum healthEat low-fat foods, try to consume foods high in fiberHave regular check-ups with a doctor about heart health
