Iran Working On Nuclear Energy Projects In 5 Coastal Areas

JAKARTA - Iran is working on nuclear energy projects in five coastal areas of the country with a nuclear electricity production target of 20,000 megawatts by 2041.

Iranian Vice President Mohammad Eslami, who is also head of Iran's Atomic Energy Organization (AEOI), said after the victory of the Islamic Revolution, it had been decided to achieve nuclear electricity production of 23,000 megawatts, but this plan was never achieved.

"In 2022, a comprehensive strategic plan for the nuclear industry was delivered, and plans began to achieve nuclear energy production of 20,000 megawatts in 2041 in five coastal locations, this plan is currently being implemented," said Eslami as quoted on the AEOI website reported by ANTARA from Sputnik, Tuesday, December 9.

Earlier, Eslami announced Iran had started the construction of a nuclear power plant on the coast of the province of Golestan in northern Iran, which has access to the Kaspia Sea.

Another coastal nuclear power plant is the Bushehr station which was built with the help of Russia.

The first unit of the plant, which was completed with Russian participation, was connected to Iran's national power grid in September 2011. The construction of the second phase of the plant, which will include two generating units, is ongoing.

In addition, in late September, Iran and Russia signed an agreement to build four US$25 billion worth of power plants in the southern Iranian province of Hormozgan, for the new Hormoz Nuclear Power Plant.

Russia and Iran have also signed a memorandum of understanding regarding cooperation in the construction of small-scale nuclear power plants in Iran.
