Satrio RIO, The Panda Baby Who Gives Birth To New Hopes For Indonesian Conservation

JAKARTA Taman Safari Indonesia (TSI) announced the birth of a giant panda baby at its conservation facility in Cisarua, Bogor, on November 27, 2025. This birth is a historic milestone for Indonesia while strengthening the position of the country in efforts to conserve endangered species at the global level, considering that the world's giant panda population is now estimated to be only about 1,900 individuals.

TSI's Corporate Communication Manager, Trully Erlynd, said that the birth of the baby panda was a tangible result of long-term international cooperation between Indonesia and China.

This program has been running since the giant panda pair Huchun and Caitao arrived in Indonesia in 2017 through a 10-year conservation partnership.

"This is a very proud achievement for Indonesia. The birth of a baby panda is proof of the success of the conservation collaboration that we have carried out with the Chinese Government and experts from the Panda Center," Trully Erlynd said in his statement, Monday, December 8.

According to him, the success of giant panda reproduction is not easy, especially because female pandas only have a fertile period of 24 to 72 hours per year.

For this reason, TSI applies precise hormonal monitoring, strict behavioral observations, and international standard animal welfare. On November 30, nutrition specialists from the Panda Center China also arrived in Indonesia to support the early care of panda babies.

Science-based approaches are the main key to this success. With the support of Chinese experts, the birth process to early care of babies can run optimally," Trully said.

Currently, baby pandas are reported to be in stable condition and monitored 24 hours by the Life Science TSI team. Babies show good initial developments, including healthy vocalization, effective breastfeeding pattern, and consistent weight gain.

Experts from the China Conservation and Research Center for the Giant Panda (CCRCGP) are also staying at the location to provide technical assistance.

In order to ensure the health of the mother and baby, the treatment area cannot be accessed by the public. We prioritize both safety and well-being in this early period, "added Trully.

On December 4, 2025, the President of the Republic of Indonesia Prabowo Subianto officially named the baby panda Satrio RIO, which means criminal' or heroic'. This name is considered to reflect Indonesia's hopes and commitment to safeguarding endangered species.

Trully emphasized that this achievement further strengthens the role of Taman Safari Indonesia as a credible, future-oriented conservation institution.

RIO's birth is proof of Indonesia's ability to meet international standards for the management and protection of endangered animals. This is an important moment for conservation in the country," he said.
