Brutal Shooting Kills 11 People Including Three Children In South Africa

JAKARTA - At least 11 people died, including three minors, in a brutal shooting incident that occurred at an illegal bar, known as shebeen, in the Saulsville Township area, Pretoria, South Africa, on Saturday, December 6.

Reporting from Bloomberg and Sky News, the South African Police (SAPS) reported that the death toll included a boy aged three and 12 years, as well as a 16-year-old girl. In addition to fatalities, 14 others were reportedly injured in the deadly attack.

Police immediately launched a massive hunting operation against three suspects, although the identities and motives of these attacks have not been disclosed. Authorities have also not confirmed whether the shooting took place inside or outside the illegal bar.

The problem of gun violence is now quite chronic in South Africa. The country is known to have one of the highest death rates in the world, with an average of about 60 cases of murder daily.

Although South Africa has a relatively strict gun possession law, authorities often state that many killings were carried out using illegal firearms.

Mass shooting incidents in bars have become a worrying pattern in recent years. This tragic event reminds of a mass shooting in 2022 at the township of Soweto, Johannesburg, which killed 16 people.

Pretoria itself is located about 50 km north of Johannesburg, making it a center for political and business activities that are now tainted by this violent act.
