JAKARTA - The Mataram City Government (Pemkot) in West Nusa Tenggara (NTB) Province has canceled the 2026 New Year celebration. This elimination is a form of empathy for disasters that occur in several areas, as well as reducing the risk of potential disasters in the midst of extreme weather.

Assistant I for Government and People's Welfare of the Mataram City Secretariat Lalu Martawang said the New Year's Eve activities would be filled with dhikr and prayer activities.

"There is no celebration of fireworks, entertainment and others," he told reporters in Mataram, Wednesday, that Antara had confiscated it.

On New Year's Eve 2026, the Mataram City Government agreed not to hold events, including public entertainment as a form of empathy for those affected by the disaster in Sumatra and other areas.

Meanwhile, to ensure that the condition of Mataram City is safely under control during New Year's Eve, Babinsa and Bhabinkamtibmas officers and sub-districts will be on standby in their respective areas.

The authorities will also carry out patrols to ensure that the New Year's Eve celebrations carried out by local residents independently run smoothly and safely.

"Don't let the moment of joy to welcome the new year end negatively, so that it can harm yourself or others," he said.

Although the Mataram City Government does not officially hold New Year's Eve activities, the public can celebrate independently with their families.

"Please if you want to celebrate with your family, as long as it's not too much," he said.

In addition, said Martawang, people who will celebrate the new year in a number of tourist attractions, especially coastal areas, should be able to pay attention to weather conditions.
