Habits Of Eating Alone Increase The Risk Of Physical Weakness, Be Careful For The Elderly
JAKARTA - Many adults eat alone at least once a day. However, new research warns that this habit can affect physical and mental health, especially in the elderly.
Research published in the journal Appetite found that eating alone is often associated with an unfavorable diet, insufficient nutritional intake, weight loss, and increased risk of frailty or physical weakness compared to those eating with others.
Researchers from Flinders University, Australia, reviewed 24 studies over two decades researching parents who eat alone and the results are quite worrying. They conclude people who eat alone are at risk of developing fidelity faster than those who eat with other people.
For adults aged 65 years and over, eating alone is associated with worse eating habits and lack of nutritious food consumption. In women, this can trigger osteoporosis, a decrease in bone density.
"The lack of nutrients will increase over time. Studies show that people who eat themselves consume less protein, potassium, and other important nutrients. The analysis shows that the more often a person eats alone, the daily protein intake can drop from 58 grams to 51 grams," said one researcher, quoted from the Daily Mail page.

Research also shows clear differences in fruit and vegetable consumption. For example in Taiwan, men who eat alone only eat vegetables about twice a day, while those who eat with other people are almost two and a half times a day.

In addition, research in Sweden shows parents who eat alone four times more likely to choose ready-to-eat food than those who eat with other people. Ready-to-eat foods usually contain higher salt, increase blood sugar, and can cause high blood pressure. Frailty in the elderly is not just feeling weak.
"This is a medical syndrome in which a person loses strength, endurance, and resilience. After appearing, the elderly become vulnerable to falling, defection, and loss of ability to live independently," said the researcher.
Eating with other people not only creates strong social bonds, but also improves mental health and has a positive impact when eating food.
"Preparing nutritious food feels less important for one person. Social signatures that usually make us eat more and try new foods disappear, while psychological burdens from loneliness also affect," explained the researcher.
Eating alone not only causes frailty, but can also cause significant weight loss in the elderly. Accidental weight loss can trigger various health problems, including muscle loss and dependence on others, as well as increase the risk of death.
To prevent fracture, the researchers suggested that doctors and nurses regularly ask about the habits of eating the elderly during the examination. For families with their parents or relatives who live alone, the message that can be taken is to eat with their families regularly can be as important as what is on the plate.
Community programs that provide meals together can also help reduce health risks while dealing with frailty.
Frailty is one of the main causes of death for the elderly in the UK, with the risk of death twice as high as for healthy people. This condition also increases the risk of heart disease, cancer, and respiratory problems.
