Commission XIII Of The House Of Representatives Asks Online Taxi Drivers Who Rape Passengers To Be Sentenced To The Maximum

JAKARTA - Member of Commission XIII of the Indonesian House of Representatives, Anisah Syakur, condemned the sexual crime committed by an online taxi driver against his passengers. He asked the perpetrator to be punished to the maximum and permanently prohibited from working as an online transportation driver.

"This is a serious crime that cannot be tolerated. I ask the police to take firm action and the company to cut off the partnership and permanently block the perpetrators," Anisah Syakur told reporters, Friday, November 28.

Anisah emphasized that online transportation services should be a safe space for all users, including women. According to her, the case of passenger rape by online taxi drivers shows that the online transportation ecosystem has not been able to guarantee protection and a sense of security for female passengers.

"We also urge for psychological assistance to victims. He should not be allowed to struggle alone to recover from trauma," said the PKB legislator from the East Java electoral district.

Furthermore, Anisah assessed that the case of raping online transportation passengers could erode public trust. According to him, the public, especially women, may think twice about using online transportation services.

This discomfort and fear is real experienced by women. The state should not allow women to live in unsafe feelings, including when using online transportation," he said.

Anisah also encouraged online taxi companies to tighten the partner selection process and ensure drivers comply with ethical and security standards.

"We have to break the chain of sexual crimes. There should be no compromise. Women have the right to a sense of security anywhere," he said.

Previously, a female passenger was convicted of rape by an online taxi driver on his way from Depok to Soekarno Airport Hatta on Saturday, November 22 in the morning.

The incident occurred at around 03.30 WIB. Initially, the perpetrator stopped on the shoulder of the Kunciran Cengkareng Toll Road on the grounds of washing his face, then moving to the passenger seat and committing sexual violence.

Instead of taking the victim to the airport, the victim was escorted back to Depok and taken down in front of his boarding house alley.
