DKT INDONESIA And DOCTOR SHARE Expand KB Services To Remote Islands In Indonesia

JAKARTA - With more than 17,000 islands, Indonesia has great geographical challenges. Thousands of families in the 3T (Disadvantaged, Frontier, and Outermost) areas are still having difficulty accessing basic health services, including Family Planning (KB) services.

According to the Ministry of Health, more than 2,000 health facilities are categorized as restricted' due to lack of infrastructure and difficulty access. The impact is most evident on KB access and reproductive health. The data show that only 56% of women are married in disadvantaged areas that use contraceptives much lower than women in urban areas and higher economic groups. That is, distance, cost, and service availability still determine who can plan their families.

To bridge this gap, DKT INDONESIA, the largest social marketing organization in the field of contraception and reproductive health, together with doctor SHARE (Doctor Cares Foundation), a non-profit humanitarian medical organization, started collaboration for three years (2025 2028) to provide KB services, training on health workers, as well as distribution of contraceptive tools and products through Ship hospitals and clinics on remote islands.

Program Development (2025)

This collaboration has reached seven archipelago areas, including Jemaja Island, Siantan Island, Tambelan Island (Bintan), Binongko Island, Tomia Island, Misool Island and Waigeo Island (King Ampat).

The visit was carried out through the Dr. Lie Dharmawan II Ship Hospital and the Nusa Waluya II Ship Hospital, which brought Doctors, Midwives, and direct service facilities to small islands.

Until now, 12 health workers have received training from DKT Indonesia, consisting of 8 general practitioners and 4 midwives, to increase the capacity of KB counseling and services.

The tools and contraceptive products that have been distributed include:

o 2,000 vials KB Inject Andalan 3 Months

o 456 TCu 380A Mainstay IUD package

o 495 package Pill KB Andalan Biruo 2,000 Silk Classic condom

o 14 sets of MVA (Manual Vacuum Aspiration) tools along with various kanula sizes

o 4 package of Monoplant implants

In addition, DKT INDONESIA also provides various medical equipment and consumable equipment to support the operation of two ship hospitals and four land clinics, including essential equipment to ensure that KB procedures are carried out safely, hygienically, and effectively.

The Next Stage (20262028)

This program will be expanded from two to four ship hospitals, so that it can reach around 42 island locations in the next three years (about 14 locations per year).

Additional 10 health workers will be trained in 2026, along with the increasing number of new service points operated by DOCTOR SHARE.

Overall, this collaboration is projected to serve up to 15,000 people throughout 2025'2028, or about 5,000 people each year providing access to counseling, contraception, and reproductive health services for rural communities most in need.

This long-term commitment ensures that the initiative between DKT INDONESIA and the DOCTOR SHARE is not just a temporary program, but a sustainable effort to strengthen local capacity, maintain service continuity, and ensure fair access to KB for the public at the forefront.
