Porsche Assessed The Performance Of The Hyundai Ioniq 5 N For The Development Of 718 EVs
JAKARTA It's no secret that every car manufacturer sometimes separates models from other manufacturers for study. Now, German sports car giant Porsche openly admits that it has learned valuable lessons from its competitors, especially from South Korea's high-performance electric car, Hyundai Ioniq 5N, when developing its next-generation electric sports car, Porsche 718 EV.
This surprising confession came from Frank Moser, Vice President of the Porsche 718 two-door model line and totaling Moser revealed that he had driven the Ioniq 5 N several times and called the experience a very eye-opening moment for the Stuttgart brand.
"We learned a lot from [Ioniq 5 N]. I drive it several times. They make it really, really good," Moser said in an interview at the 2025 Icons of Porsche festival in Dubai, quoted from Drive, Wednesday, November 26.
The performance of Ioniq 5 N even managed to amaze Andreas Preuninger, the head of the GT Porsche vehicle, the figure behind the legendary high-performance models like 911 GT3.
"I remember driving it with Andy Preuninger. I said to him, 'Come on, I'll talk to Ioniq 5 N.' He said, ' endow me, I don't want that kind of electric car.' We got into the car and I hit the button [N Grin Boost], and he was immediately surprised: 'Wow.' They did something impressive," Moser said.

In comparison, Ioniq 5N is able to produce a combined power of 478kW/770Nm in N Grin Boost mode, with an acceleration of 0-100 km/hour in just 3.4 seconds.
One of the most prominent features of Ioniq 5 N is the 'N e-shift' system that replicates the 8-speed dual-clutch (DCT) transmission gear propagation rate, and 'N Active Sound+' which features three synthetic driving sounds.
Asked if Porsche took inspiration from these virtual sound features and artificial dental displacements, Moser hinted that "this is the way" for the 718 EV, but with an important note: drivers should have the option to turn off the feature.
"Customers can decide whether they want to drive in total silence mode, or they want to be part of the game, feel the virtual sound of flat-six engines and virtual gear movement," Moser explained. "That will be the direction for the future."
Porsche Focuss On Weight, Even Though It's Tougher
Despite acknowledging Ioniq 5 N, Porsche remains firm on its core philosophy. Model 718 EV, which is scheduled to arrive in early 2027, will focus on weight loss, although Moser confirmed that the car was "a little heavier" than the current 718 gasoline-engined.
"We are working hard to keep weight low. I can't tell you the numbers now, but believe me, for electric cars, this is a very light car," Moser concluded.
