Trump-PM Takaichi Talks 25 Minutes Via Phone Amid Japanese-China Tensions

JAKARTA - Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi and US President Donald Trump discussed various challenges facing the Indo-Pacific region, as the two spoke by telephone.

The two leaders also exchanged views on strengthening the Japan-US Alliance. President Trump gave an explanation of the latest situation in China's US relations, including the recent US summit of China, "said a Japanese Foreign Ministry statement quoted by ANTARA from Anadolu, Tuesday, November 25.

The ministry noted the telephone conversation lasted 25 minutes.

The two leaders emphasized that the two countries will continue to work closely together in the current international situation, "added the Japanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The telephone conversation came a day after Trump spoke with Chinese President Xi Jinping amid tensions between Beijing and Tokyo over Taiwan.

On Monday (24/11), Trump described his phone talks with Xi as "very good", adding that he accepted an invitation to visit Beijing in April.

According to Chinese state media, Xi told Trump that Taiwan's return to China was an important part of the postwar international order.

As for November 7, Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi told legislators that any Chinese attack on Taiwan legally could be categorized as a life-threatening situation, which could allow Japan to exercise collective defense rights.

Takaichi's statement sparked a strong reaction from Beijing. China also issued an appeal not to its citizens not to travel to Japan, to reimpose the ban on imports of seafood, and take a number of other restrictive measures.
