Scottish Captain Thinks The Late Diogo Jota Because He Has A Dream To Meet At The 2026 World Cup

JAKARTA - Scottish captain Andrew Robertson said he spent time before the 2026 World Cup Qualification match against Denmark, which ended in victory, thinking about his former Liverpool teammate, Diogo Jota.

Robertson revealed that the two had the same dream of playing at the 2026 World Cup.

A 4-2 win against Denmark in Glasgow confirmed Scotland's place in the 2026 World Cup - the first seen since 1998 - with goals from Scott McTominay, Lawrencepland, Kieran Tierney, and Kenny McLean to ensure a dramatic victory.

However, Robertson admitted that Scotland's euphoria of escaping was saddened by his close friendship with Portugal striker Jota, who died in a car accident with his brother, Andre Silva, in July 2025.

"I think I hid it well, but I feel devastated. I know with my current age, this will be my last chance for the World Cup."

"I can't forget my friend Diogo Jota today. We talked a lot together about the World Cup (2026)."

"He missed Qatar (2022) due to injury and I never qualify. We always discussed how it felt going to the 2026 World Cup, but I knew he would smile to see me tonight."

"I couldn't forget it all day long, so I was a bit bothered in my previous room. I think hiding it well from the kids, but I'm very happy it all ended like this," Robertson told BBC Scotland.

Liverpool defender Robertson has enjoyed great success at Anfield since moving from Hull City in 2017, winning two Premier League titles and one Champions League, as well as success in the FA Cup and EFL Cup (Carabao Cup).

However, the Glasgow-born full-back said that Scotland's victory against Denmark was one of the greatest nights of his life.

"To be honest, this group of children and staff is the best group I've ever played. The manager's speech (Steve Clarke) before the game was incredible."

"He tells the story of memories we have created and invites us to create new memories."

"We were very emotional at the time. So, to do it for everyone, this will be one of the greatest nights of my life."

"We continued to fight until the end. It was one of the crazyest football games. We've clearly brought this country through, but I'm sure it's all worth it because we're going to the World Cup and I don't believe it," Robertson said.
