David Coverdale From Whitesnake Announces Retirement From Music World

JAKARTA - Whitesnake's vocalist and frontman David Coverdale has officially announced his resignation from the music world. This decision marks the end of his career journey that has spanned more than five decades.

The 74-year-old singer, who has also been Deep Purple's lead vocalist from 1973 to 1976, said the ending of her extraordinary career through video messages shared through her personal YouTube channel.

"After more than 50 years of an amazing journey with you guys, with Deep Purple, with Whitesnake, Jimmy Page, in recent years it's been very clear to me that this is the right time for me to actually take off my rock and roll platform and tight jeans," Coverdale said, quoted Monday, November 17.

"And as you can see, we have taken care of the lionaicon. But this is the time for me to end it. I love you so much. I thank everyone who has helped and supported me on this amazing journey All musicians, crew, fans, family. This is great, but it's really time for me to enjoy my retirement. And I hope you can appreciate it," he added.

Health problems affect decisions

David Coverdale's retirement decision comes after a series of health challenges he has faced recently, which also led to the cancellation of Whitesnake's farewell tour.

In October 2023, Coverdale spoke to SiriusXM's "Trunk Nation With Eddie Trunk" about Whitesnake's future plans. He said his physical condition was the main consideration.

"My band and I continue to communicate. Whitesnake is still there and there are still offers to come. I can't consider anything until I fix my physical aspects," said the British musician.

Some of the health problems suffered, including the recent incident and the fact that it had two cuts of the rotator puff, which certainly interfered with its performance. "But my job, all these kinds of things are starting to attack," he added.

In May 2023, he also explained to Rockonteurs about the respiratory infections he experienced in 2022. The severe sine and trakea infection forced him to cancel the rest of Whitesnake's European tour in June 2022 and a scheduled North American tour due to ongoing treatment for persistent upper respiratory tract infections at that time.

Coverdale admitted that the disease was very bad, especially when it attacked his vocal band. It took him seven months to recover from a sinus infection that spreads so deep into his body.

Had planned to retire at the age of 69

Interestingly, Coverdale once revealed that he actually wanted to retire early, in 2020.

"I want to retire in 2020," Coverdale said. "I think the right age for singer Whitesnake to resign is 69. But, of course, the stupid COVID came (and broke the plan)."

Despite retiring from the stage, Coverdale doesn't seem to have completely left the music. He said he still had a planned music project for the next few years.

"We have three to five years of projects in my studio here. So I'm definitely not done with music. But my health will determine whether I can accept (the full set)," he said.

With this official announcement, David Coverdale has now closed an extraordinary long round of his career as a rock star choosing to focus on health and enjoying a long-delayed retirement.
