France Brings Proposed Social Media Restrictions To The European Union

French President Emmanuel Macron on Wednesday reiterated they were working at the European level to ban social media for users under certain age.

"I believe we need to move towards banning social media to a certain age," President Macron told La Depeche du Midi daily readers in a debate about social media as part of his visit to Toulouse.

Reaffirming the need for protection, President Macron said the debate continued over whether the age limit should be set at 14, 15, or 16 years.

"We need to finish it. And we are currently building a coalition in Europe to achieve this," said President Macron.

When asked about his presence at US social media company X, and in general on social media in the era of online misinformation, President Macron said he "does not rule out leaving social media."

"This should be a comprehensive process; it's not something I'm going to do tomorrow morning. I won't announce it today, but it's something I'm thinking about," he explained.

France has adopted a law requiring parental permission for individuals under the age of 15 to access social media by 2023, but the law has not been enforced because there are still doubts over its compliance with European law.
