Angelina Jolie Visits Ukraine's Frontline Area The Most Dangerous

JAKARTA - Hollywood actress Angelina Jolie visited one of Ukraine's most dangerous frontline cities and neighboring areas. She met with medical staff, volunteers, and civilians who were constantly attacked by Russian troops.

"While governments around the world ignore the protection of civilians, their strength and support from each other, it is very degrading," Jolie said in a statement released on Thursday, November 6, by the Legacy of War Foundation.

"Mykolaiv and Kherson residents live in danger every day, but they refuse to give up," Jolie said.

Photographs show Jolie wearing a cooperative jacket in the basement, and meeting the kids in a windowless room.

The group said it visited medical and educational facilities that had been moved underground to avoid a persistent Russian attack.

Kherson, formerly home to nearly 300,000 people, is the largest city within Russia's frontline arms range, making it one of Ukraine's most dangerous cities.

The city was occupied by Russian troops from March 2022 until they withdrew eight months later across the Dnipro River, where they remained on the opposite side.

A UN investigation last month found Russia had been hunting for civilians living near the front lines with drones, forcing thousands of people to flee, which is a crime against humanity. Russia denies allegations of deliberately targeting civilians.

Local officials said the Ukrainian military shot down about 2,500 of the 2,646 Russian drones launched to attack the Kherson region last week.

"We are very grateful for (Jelie's visit) and for the fact that people come here," Oleksandr Tolokonnikov, deputy head of Kherson's regional government, told Ukrainian state-owned major television. "Sometimes we feel forgotten, but we can see that the reality is not so," he said.

Jolie previously came to the city of Lviv in western Ukraine in the spring of 2022 to meet people displaced by war.
