Ukraine Attacks Russia With 75 Drones, Dozens Of Flights At 13 Airports Stopped

JAKARTA - Ukraine attacked Russia with 75 unmanned aircraft on Thursday, triggering a fire in an industrial area in the southern Russian city of Volgograd. The Ukrainian attack killed one person and stopped dozens of flights across the region.

Ukraine has recently attacked Russian oil refineries, depots and pipelines in a bid to weaken Russia's economy while Russian troops are moving forward in eastern Ukraine.

Reported by Reuters on Thursday, November 6, Volgograd Governor Andrei Bocharov said a 48-year-old man was killed by shrapnel and fire broke out in an industrial area in the Krasnoarmeysk district, the city formerly known as Stalingrad.

This district is the location of the main Volgograd refinery owned by Lukoil which has repeatedly been targeted by Ukraine. By 2024, the Volgograd refinery will process 13.7 million metric tons of oil, or 5.1% of the total volume of Russian refineries.

Russia's Defense Ministry said 75 Ukrainian unmanned aircraft were shot down overnight, including 49 in the Volgograd region.

Russian media reported 13 airports across Russia stopped flights as a result of the drone strike.

Russia said on Wednesday its troops were moving forward north within Pokrovsk in a bid to fully control the Ukrainian city.

The Russian military claims to have controlled more than 19% of Ukraine, or about 116,000 square km (44,800 square miles).

The pro-Ukraine map shows that Russia has controlled more than 3,400 square km of Ukrainian territory so far this year - the same map showing that by the end of 2023, Russia controlled 18% of Ukraine.
