As Victims Of Import Tariffs Strangled Trump, Xi Invites Canadian PM To Visit China

JAKARTA - Chinese President Xi Jinping invited Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney to visit the Bamboo Curtain country, Friday, October 31.

China's relations with Canada were among the worst among any Western country, but both were caught in US President Donald Trump's government tariff sanctions.

Even the sanctions continued to bind China even though Xi met Trump for about 1 hour 45 minutes at the airbase in Busan, South Korea, Thursday, October 30.

"Recently, with the joint efforts of both parties, China-Canada relations have shown recovery towards a positive development trend," Xi told Carney when they met at the APEC 2025 Summit in South Korea, Friday, October 31, quoted from AFP.

"China is willing to work with Canada to get China-Canada relations back on track," Xi added.

Xi's reply, Carney said Canada was ready to open a constructive and pragmatic dialogue overcoming China and Canada's new problems'.

Carney also called dialogue a way "to help build a more sustainable and inclusive international system."

"In recent years, we haven't been very involved yet," Carney replied to Xi's invitation.

China-Canada relations have been frozen since 2018 after the arrest of a senior Chinese telecommunications executive on a US warrant in Vancouver. China then retaliated with the detention of two Canadians on charges of espionage.

In July 2025, Canada again pressed China. Carney announced an additional 25 percent tariff for steel imports was merged and charged from China.

The following month, China announced it would impose a burdensome interim import duty of 75.8 percent for Canadian kanola imports.

Canada is one of the largest canola producers in the world. Kanola is an oil seed plant used to make cooking oil, animal flour, and biodiesel fuel.

However, Canada and China are both the main targets of Trump's global trade attacks.
